Everything in this game looks old, run-down and gloomy. Oh, and did I forget to mention that the cultists also seem to gloat a little whenever they defeat you too? This is hilariously melodramatic!įirst of all, there is the general atmosphere of the game. As well as some truly excellent action elements, it was also one of the first FPS games to include strong comedy elements too. It featured a muscular, steroid-gulping, hard-drinking and thoroughly sleazy action hero called Duke Nukem who saves Earth from an alien invasion whilst saying “badass” one-liners. Its main theme was that it was a ludicrously over-the-top parody of 1980s action movies.

“Duke Nukem 3D” was an “edgy” re-imagining of a beloved series of early 1990s 2D platform games.

This engine was most famous for being used in the 1996 first-person shooter game “Duke Nukem 3D”. It was co-developed by 3D Realms, who were well-known at the time for a game engine designed by Ken Silverman called the Build Engine – which could be used to create “2.5D” games, which had 3D locations and 2D character sprites. I should probably start by putting “Blood” (1997) into context.

This article will also contain SPOILERS for “Silent Hill 2” (2001) and “Amnesia: The Dark Descent” (2010). Some of my recent articles have been a bit too “Resident Evil”-centric and, whilst I still seem to be firmly in the mood for the cosy nostalgia of the 1990s/early-mid 2000s and the solid gameplay of older games ( despite having a few modern ones I really should play), I thought that I’d shake things up a bit and talk about another game.
